Kathy and Karen began working with the Vancouver chapter of the Shoebox Project in 2017, and together with a group of amazing volunteers, steadily grew support for the project within their home city of Richmond. In 2022, the Richmond chapter was formed. Kathy and Karen have established strong connections with local agencies who are doing the hard work in the community all through the year and they are happy to support the work of those groups. Among the highlights for Karen and Kathy each year are the continued collaboration with their volunteer crew and the way the Shoebox project attracts new folks to be involved each year. Individual donors express how much they appreciate being able to get involved, knowing the gift will make a big difference for a woman in our community. Creating the shoebox of gifts is simple and meaningful. People can easily get their children involved and in turn have discussions about homelessness and challenges facing women right here in our own community.

The Richmond Shoebox Project occupies the ancestral, traditional and contemporary lands of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (Cayuse, Umatilla and Walla Walla), S’ólh Téméxw Nation, Semiahmoo First Nations, Kwantlen First Nations, Tsawwassen First Nations, Musqueam First Nations, Stz’uminus First Nations. In particular, our Chapter resides on land ceded in the Hul’qumi’num Treaty Group. We recognize and support the Indigenous individuals and communities who live here now, and those who were forcibly removed from their homelands. In offering this land acknowledgement, we affirm Indigenous sovereignty, history and experiences.
